Pier 39 Sea Lions & The Rock

The 1989 World Series featured the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's in a Battle of the Bay.  I was watching the game when the massive Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco.  I remember seeing the footage of the double decker highway collapsed as well as a portion of the Bay Bridge. Shortly after this earthquake was when a few California sea lions started congregating on Pier 39's K-dock.  It wasn't long before hundreds of sea lions began arriving and "living" at the dock, much to the chagrin of those who use the marina.

Pier 39 is located along the San Francisco Bay in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood.  Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 in particular are very popular with tourists, as evidenced by the crowded streets and long lines.  The sea lions are also a popular draw, with lots of barking and laying around on the dock working on their tans.  My guess is that they are aware of the attention
the tourists give them, so they'll entertain them from time to time with their antics.

Just off the shore in the Bay is Alcatraz.  "The Rock" is a former prison, subject of several movies, and preserved by the National Park Service. You must book a ferry to go out and see it, and we didn't buy tickets before we left so they are all sold out the entire time we're here.  Mona and I have been out to it before, but I was hoping the others would have the chance.  I guess that means another trip to San Francisco is in order.
