The Swiss Guard have pledged allegiance to the Pope since the 1500's and stand guard over Vatican City to this Day. A good history of the Swiss Guard can be found
here from the Vatican website. One of the most striking things about them is the uniform they wear -- an icon of the Vatican although maybe not the religious kind.
